Being the South African National Time Trial and Road Champion is a great privilege and one that I wanted again for the 2014 season. My national champs rolled around just before I was about to take off for Europe so I was hoping I would get to pack a certain special jersey or two.
The format of Nationals was a nice change this year as all the events, from para to masters to juniors, were brought back together again. Hosted in Durban by KwaZulu-Natal Cycling, we started off with the time trial. It was a breath of fresh air to have a lap course instead of the typical out and back route and, even though it was flat, I really enjoyed the course. I was able to defend my title and claim the win in a time of 42:39 for the 30km effort.
The racing events culminated with the elite road races. Both the elite men and elite women took to the circuit at the same time making it truly a spectator event! The tough hilly circuit had the women cover 126 in 7 laps. Unfortunately, the race wasn’t aggressive but with the heat and humidity I had to be careful and time my moves well. I kept pushing the pace whenever we hit a climb and, coming into the final lap, the string finally snapped and no one was behind me. I drove it hard and managed to stay away solo until the end. I was happy to grab the win and I’ll be proud everyday in Europe flying the South African flag!
